How difficult is it to tint your windows?

  • I have a sunfire coupe and want to tint the windows. How difficult is it to do yourself? I think the hardest part would be the rear window.


  • Not hard to do, but if not done correctly, it will look like crap. The Auto parts stores sell kits to do this yourself.

    HEADS UP: Check your state's automobile window tinting laws. This will be easier to do than having to scrape it off later after a cop pulls you over for tinting that is too dark or illegal. Seen it many times.


  • To do a good job requires practice and patience.
    The key is to precut the window tint to the exact shape of the window before trying to install it. spray the window lightly with a soapy water solution, this will make it very easy to get bubble out. use a bondo scraper or even a credit card to smooth out all the bubbles, and one all of them are gone, use a hair dryer to warm up the tint, helping to dry it. do not roll down the window for at least a day to allow it to fully dry.
    the hard part is getting below the window edging, as this requires you to pull back and slide the tint under it, and this can easily wrinkle the tint making it almost impossilbe to get perfectly smooth.
    For the backwindow, its a little more tricky. Most rear windows have a defroster and a black paint around the edges that have little black dots, that window tinting does not like to stick to. cut it just large enough to cover these dots and tape the top will smoothing the bubbles out when the window it wet, otherwise it will keep sliding down on you and peeling off from the black paint.


  • It is not fun, just have it done. trust me!!
