Vegetarian for wrong reason?

  • i wouldn't call myself bulimic or anorexic, but i used to have "food issues" where i would obsess over calories, and not eat for a few days, or purge my food sometimes. a few months ago i became vegetarian because of a book i read which grossed me out about meat. but i knew subconsciously i also stopped eating meat for the satisfaction of self control and not letting myself eat certain foods. is this normal, or unhealthy? i don't purge anymore and i eat every day now because i feel so happy that i'm witholding something from my body. but at the same time i know a vegetarian lifestyle is very healthy for you, and i make sure i eat right etc. i guess i was just wondering if there's anyone out there who is doing what i'm doing for the wrong reason?

  • You have discussed your "food issues" with your doctor, right? I highly recommend it.

  • As long as you're being healthy now, it doesn't really matter why you started. Just be sure to keep taking care of yourself.

  • I am also a control freak about my foods. About two years ago, I started working out and eating right (not veg yet though) and lost quite a bit of weight. I became very controlling and counted all my calories and fat intake. I still do that sometimes, but being vegan has so many benefits ... I know that I'm naturally eating better by not having dairy, eggs, or meat. I think that if it helps you get over your eating issues, it's just fine. I've struggled with this myself, actually. I can admit that besides saving animals, I'm saving myself from worrying so much about what I used to eat. I know I'll never be overweight like I was because it's almost impossible.

Thanks for giving me some insight into myself with your question!

  • roshan is spam! report!

i do it for the animals..lots of people do it for the animals.

lots of people also do it for health. lots do it because of both

there is no wrong reason for becoming a vegetarian, you are helping yourself, animals, and the environment

  • I think you have a problem but have hit on a happy way to deal with it.
Just be vigilant about slipping back into your old behavior of not eating.
I would also recommend that you seek or continue to get help to understand the reasons for your problems-unresolved issues could lead to other types of self destructive behavior.

  • How would it be wrong? As long as you're heating HEALTHY, there isn't anything wrong. If you're getting essential nutrients, you're fine.

  • Somehow I doubt that you're eating a balanced diet with enough nutrition, and vegetarian has nothing to do with it. You need to talk to a doctor.

  • thats not healthy

  • Caring about your health is not a bad reason to be vegetarian.

  • I think you need to talk to your dr. Being vegetarian is perfectly healthy, but I'm getting the feeling you may not be eating everything you should.
