Should I ask for references now?

  • I'm hoping to go to grad school in two or three years, I want to work for a bit and then go. Should I ask my professors for references now? Would they still be good to turn in three years from now? Should i ask for them in a sealed envelope?

  • If you are a good enough student and stand out then they will remember you two or three years from now. I don't think it will be a good idea to ask for them now its not like having sealed transcripts.

  • ok, let' suppose that your prof. remenbers you. Then wouldn't you think that those references are a little bit "expired"; im saying this what would your prof would say about you?: that you were an A student 3 years ago? (he/she has to state the time period you took the class.)

let me use a little bit of phi:
you know that when people do research they try to use the most current references to support their arguments because they make their research papers more outstanding with CURRENT inf. than those with old, and possibly inaccurate inf. because as time passes the more there is change.

Strong references would be those that are recent. So it's obvious that an student with the same qualities and as outstanding as you are has recommendation letters taken from his/her senior year would be better than one taken during the freshmen year or possibly sophomore.

so i'm not discouraging you not to get it, bu i mean that recent recommendation letters increase your chances of being accepted.

    good luck
