Attendence problems

  • Last season I expanded my stadium from 7000 to 12000 after a string of sellouts. I finished last season with a sellout at 12000 and then also sold out both of my home Open Cup games this season.

    Since i was still selling out at 12000, I expanded the stadium to 20000 and haven't had a crowd larger than 12000 since. Currently I have 704 supporters @ "high on life".

    Any ideas why I can't draw any better? Does PICing the matches have any effect on crowd? Is it because all the other teams in my series are craptacular bot teams that nobody wants to come see?

    I spent a little too much on the expansion because I hoped it would payoff quickly... now I'm fighting financial problems.

    My attendance is suffering a bit as well, I've gotten 50k to my 5 home matches this season. Here's a breakdown of sorts since I expanded to 80,000:

    Ssn 20 - 48,757 (Was getting creamed in the ML)
    Ssn 21 - 60,524 (Finished 3rd in II.3, or maybe 4th)
    Ssn 22 - 72,205 (Finished 2nd in II.3)
    Ssn 23 - 50,681 (Currently 4th in II.3)

    Ssn 21-22 - 66,362 (Past two seasons in II.3)

    I know I just ended a serious losing streak, but a 21,524 drop in average from Ssn 22 to Ssn 23 is a bit harsh. A 15,681 drop off from my II.3 two-season average is harsh as well. This season has just been one of extremes. Take a look at this:

    Top 5 Crowds (since expanding to 80,000)
    1. 80,000 (Home Date 1, Ssn 23)
    2. 80,000 (Home Date 2, Ssn 23)
    3. 80,000 (Home Date 7, Ssn 22)
    4. 80,000 (Home Date 7, Ssn 21)
    5. 79,368 (Home Date 2, Ssn 20)

    Worst 5 Crowds (since expanding to 80,000)
    1. 27,479 (Home Date 5, Ssn 20)
    2. 29,633 (Home Date 3, Ssn 23)
    3. 29,817 (Home Date 4, Ssn 20)
    4. 30,797 (Home Date 4, Ssn 23)
    5. 32,951 (Home Date 5, Ssn 23)

    So I started off selling the place out, then once I lost in the cup (and then the league) my attendance bottomed out worse then it did when I was in the ML.

    I'm losing about $100,000 each home match compared to what I got last season. I'm not even making a profit in weeks with a home match, yet my salaries aren't even in the top 15 in D2.

  • Any ideas why I can't draw any better?Most teams are in the same boat, it's been a hot topic in the conferences. It looks very much like some changes the HT team made to supporter mood are having a very negative (and presumably unintended) effect on attendance.


  • Well, I think you expanded a bit to early to begin with.

  • My match last week was the first time I sold out since I increased to 14,000 seats in season 22.


    Since there's 3 or 4 of these stories, makes you wonder if something was changed last week....


  • Since this has been bumped back up...

    This last week was the first time since expanding from 12000 that I drew a crowd of 12000 or more. 17556 against the #2 team in my all bot division.I had been having a problem with attendance up till last week as well. But the stars aligned and I got the 23k sellout. This after a low of less than 7K 4 weeks ago. Not sure what to expect for my final home game.

  • It mostly has to do with the bot teams, Chris can tell you more about that, having been in a bot league last year, but I would assume that playing in a bot league hurts your attendence.


  • I was at 15K for most of the season. I went to 23K with three home games or so left in the season. I sold out one and nearly the other. I'd have to check to see exactly what happened.

    The other thing to bear in mind is the new "smarter" supporter system. Supposedly things like your opponents winning streak and such are taken into account. If you are playing the bottom feeders right now, that will realy affect your attendance.

    I just played the #8 team in my series. He has won zero games and has gotten murdered. I drew less than 7K in attendance, combined with a rainy day. That really hurt.

  • I'm glad the attendance things haven't been hitting me hard, since I've been kicking ass and taking names after being relegated to Div VI this season. I've sold out 3 of my 6 home league games (and my one home cup match) this year, including the last two league matches. My stadium was at 18250, but I just expanded to 30k and it'll be ready for the next home league match. I have 1100+ supporters. I'm just worried if I struggle next year in Div V that I might have a lot of empty seats.


  • Well, I think you expanded a bit to early to begin with. I just now started consistantly selling out my 18,000 seater with a fan club of over 1000.


  • Yes, it is very depressing when even the top division guys can't make money on weeks they have home games. Maybe they will work with the attendence thing a little more before 6.7 is released.


  • Interesting point... my opponent drew ~50k in attendance last week.

    (As an aside, I wasn't exactly trying to bump the thread, it was new since my last visit, I was away for a while.)
