UTF-8 Support

  • From what I'v read in the support forums,vBulletin does not support UTF-8 out of the box.

What would be the exact steps to make a fresh vBullettin install use UTF-8 everywhere?

Are there any parts that might be broken by switching to UTF-8?

What is the ETA for Version 4.0 with proper UTF-8 support?

  • The problem is not that UTF-8 isn't support. The problem is converting existing data to UTF-8 as such, vBulletin uses the default collation of the database when its tables are created. Also the minimum version of MySQL that we require does not support character sets or UTF8. On a new installation with an empty database you can support UTF-8.

You need to follow these instructions to setup vBulletin correctly though:

  • Where exactly do you think or have you read that vBulletin does not work in UTF-8 out of the box?

  • http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=253098 or http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=205071 didn't sound too promising.

Also this forum here does not run on UTF-8. So can you please assure me that UTF-8 is fully supported, by simply hitting a switch in the installer or setting a config option (if yes, what option?). And can you also assure that there are no other problems related to UTF-8 (eg. non working search, broken characters in email notifications or what else other PHP software often has problems with)?

Working UTF-8 support is crucial for me, so I'd like to check make sure before considering to buy.
