I'm going to IGR at the end of this month...is Chloroquine an okay drug for malaria for this part of Argentina and Brazil, or do I need to be taking something more potent?

You need to get up-to-date medical advice on this - I contracted Malaria in Mumbai a year or so ago, in spite of having spent some time in India as a child and discreetly throwing away all my antimalarials because they tasted so vile and not getting it then, so I assumed I would be all right now.I'm going to IGR at the end of this month...is Chloroquine an okay drug for malaria for this part of Argentina and Brazil, or do I need to be taking something more potent?

Was in IGR with the mrs. a month ago.We were not told to take any drugs,
we didnot take any and we are both healthy.
BTW. If you visit the Brazil side - just for the day - You do not need a
Brazilian Visa.
Take the bus from the bus terminal in IGR to FOZ DE IGUACU (Brazil ) and
you don't even have to get off the bus at the Brazilian border crossing.
( bus ride takes 30 min. and cost 2 peso. )

MichaelWent last year and took no drugs at all. In Bali and Saba I did take Malaria tablets but not in that part of SA.I'm going to the doctor Monday. I hope they'll know.
As for the visa, I ended up getting one...I figure it's incentive to go to Rio in the next five years!Lucky you! One of our very favorite places. Chloroquine has a lot of undesireable side effects like diarrhea and anorexia.I asked a doctor at the Hospital Alemán in Buenos Aires about the malaria risk in Misiones. He told me the hospital has never seen a case of malaria aquired from traveling to Iguazú, and presumably thousands of porteños visit the cataratas every year.
Incidentally, I didn't know Cipro could be effective as malaria prophylaxis. I thought it was just an antibiotic, albeit a fancy, new generation one.I think you are more likely to give yourself health problems taking Chloroquine than catching Malaria at Iguazu.
When I was there nobody mentioned any danger from Malaria? My wife is Argentine and she has never heard of any danger either.I do not know about the need for Brazil but to be on the safe side, take it....depends on the temp and humidty and rain that they have recvd....
I have never had any problems about the side effects and my family and I take it everytime we go to India...we start approx 1 month before and end 1 month after...
I do get sick in India, but that is just because I end up eating food off the streets which I can't avoid.,..My doctor recommends Cipro 500 mg for prophylaxis use. He said the quinines are not that effective anymore. So check with your own doctor on this. Malaria is not something to fool with.I personally do not know if that area is a hot zone for Malaria or not, but
I can tell you that Chloroquine does not protect you from all strains of malaria.
I generally use Mefloquine for my travel, but you better talk to a Doctor before
you use anything.
